CASE STUDY
Production Incident Troubleshooting Across Application and Infrastructure Layers
A structured approach to root-cause isolation, corrective actions and production stabilization.
Incident mindset
Production engineering involves incident investigation, root-cause isolation and corrective actions across application and infrastructure layers. Begin with impact and stabilization, then test hypotheses against evidence instead of assuming the most recent error is the cause.
Layer-by-layer investigation
Trace a request through the application, database, sessions or cache, NGINX, load balancer and infrastructure. Determine where expected behavior first diverges. Keep a timeline so observations from different layers can be compared.
Observability / logging
Use available application and infrastructure logs to correlate a failure with a request, time window and deployment. Prefer useful context over large volumes of output, and avoid logging credentials, session values or confidential payloads.
Database / application checks
Check application code paths, database connectivity and query behavior. Sessions and cached state can explain why a problem affects only some requests. Separate a slow dependency from an application error before choosing a corrective action.
Infrastructure checks
Review NGINX behavior, AWS/RDS health, WAF decisions and load-balancer routing with the infrastructure team. A blocked or misrouted request can resemble an application failure, so verify whether it reaches the service.
Deployment verification
Compare the running release and configuration with the intended deployment. Check environment-specific settings and dependency connectivity. Verify deployment completion rather than assuming a successful build means the production service is healthy.
Communication / stabilization
Coordinate with client and infrastructure stakeholders using confirmed impact, current findings and the next check. After a corrective action, verify recovery through the affected request path and observe for recurrence.
Lessons learned
Record the root cause, evidence, corrective action and a practical prevention step. This approach reflects the portfolio’s production-engineering scope without identifying a confidential system or describing a specific private incident.
